Use

We use modals of probability to talk about what is possible, to make a guess, or draw a logical conclusion. Must shows a strong sense of certainty, followed by less certain may and might. Could shows the least amount of certainty.

Example:

Hee must be Tom’s cousin.

Explanation:

It is very likely or possible that he is Tom’s cousin because the speaker is making a guess or deduction based on something.

How to build

The modals of probability are must, might, may, could, should, will, and can’t. Like all other modals, must, might, may, could, should, will, and can’t are used with other verbs.

• I must have been away when she called.

• That may be the keys I was looking for.

• He could be dreaming.

• She ought to know the answer to the question.
