Use

The first conditional is used when talking about future events that will most likely happen.

Example:

If it snows, I will stay at home.

Explanation:

We use the first conditional here because in the case that it does snow, you will stay at home. If it snows is the ‘if’ clause, and I will stay is the main clause.

How to build

A first conditional sentence has an ‘if’ clause and a main clause. Clause can come first, but when the ‘if’ clause comes first we use a comma.

If + simple present, simple future

  • If you leave now, you will arrive on time.

  • If you leave later, you will not arrive on time.

simple future + if + simple present

  • You will arrive on time if you leave now.

  • You will not arrive on time if you leave later.

More Examples

  • If he sleeps late, he will be yawn tomorrow.

  • He will cook dinner if you go to the market.
