The Cabinist

“I just don’t know if I can go through with this,”
she says.
“Please trust me, honey.”
I reply.
“This will be so good for us.”
The more distance I put between myself and that city,
the freer I feel.
I only wish my wife felt the same way.
Our new home patiently awaits us.
I’ve been dreaming of this day for years:
the day we leave behind the cell phones, the computers,
and every other anxiety-inducing object that has complicated our lives.
As I change lanes, of course,
she notices the steering wheel vibrating under my hands.
“You just used technology,”
she said.
“See how helpful it was?
And so now you want to go without any technology whatsoever?”
I reply:
“I didn’t really need the car’s help.
I just sat this assist because I thought you liked the vibrations.”
She rolls her eyes, but I ignore it and tell her,
“We’ll live off the land. I’ll grow a beard.”
“I don’t think that would be a good look for you,”
she says.
“Fine. I won’t grow the beard.
Just so we get away from the technology that has hacked into our souls.
Why are you laughing at me?!”
“Whoa!”
“What happened?” she asks.
“Oh. Nothing.
It’s just something my car does from time to time to keep me from wrecking it.”
“See,” she says.
“Technology just saved your life!”
“It did not!
I would’ve seen the truck eventually.
It was huge.”
“You are unbelievable,” she says.
“I’ll give this one week,
but if I don’t like it,
I’m moving out and then you can either have me or your stupid cabin, but not both.”
ONE YEAR LATER
I sometimes wish I hadn’t let her take the car.
