Now the next activity I want to talk about is one of my absolute favorites. And it is

again, a medium or middle activity. And it teaches about the environment. It teaches

about recycling which I just think is wonderful and it’s wonderful for kids to learn about.

What you want to do is ahead of time, and you might have to do a little research on

this, because you might be a little surprised at what's recyclable and what's not. But you're

going to find out what is recyclable and what is not. And you're going to write these items

down on little pieces of paper. So you might have light bulbs, you might have food scrapes,

you might have Styrofoam, you might have a coffee cup container, a to go box from the

night before dinner, whatever it is. Come up with items that are recyclable and items

that are not. When you go in to the class you want to pick two people to drive the trucks.

And you're going to have a trash truck, one person gets to be the trash truck. The other

person gets to be the recycle truck. Line all the other students up. Let them pick one

of the pieces of paper. They have to then determine whether they should get in the trash

truck or the recycle truck. And the trucks get to drive along the line of the students.

If the trash truck comes by and the student thinks that they are trash, they get in the

trash truck, get in the line behind the trash truck driver. If they think they're recyclable,

they get in the recycle truck. So once the two trucks have passed everyone in the line

and all of the students are in a truck, then you go down the line and allow the students

to read what item they have and find out if they're in the right truck or not. If they're

in the trash truck and they're really recyclable then they need to move over to the recycle

truck and vice versa. And this is a great way to teach about recycling and the environment.
