Meet Peter Parkinson of the parrot police! Peter (a police officer) arrested two men on a plane at Heathrow Airport in London- then arrested a man at a house near London. Peter found ten parrots and other birds. One of the birds was a Lear's Macaw parrot- worth 60,000 "The Lear's Macaw is a beautiful bird" said Peter. "We called her Kylie because she's small and pretty" Kylie was lucky-but most parrots aren't. "Smugglers earn about $15 billion a year for animal smuggling" said Peter. "Each year, they take about 5 million birds and 30,000 monkeys from the jungle and sell them to collectors. It's a huge buisness". "They often put the animals into tiny boxes and 90% of the animals die"-said Peter. This box had sixty parrots in. All the parrots were dead when they arrived. The smugglers are killing millions of animals" Collectors want the animals for pets, clothes or medicines. There is a lot of business on the Internet. Animal smugglers make millions from the suffering of animals. For Kylie, the story has a happy ending. She is going back to her home in the South American jungle. But Peter is still watching for smugglers. "We have to stop this cruel business" he said. "Governments have to act quickly to stop the smugglers- before more animals die"
